Eligibility
Who may qualify?
Check the covered dates, products, locations, and other official terms before you file.
- You own or lease a 2011–2022 Hyundai or Kia vehicle that was not factory-equipped with an engine immobilizer and is eligible for the free Software Upgrade and the free zinc-reinforced ignition cylinder protector hardware upgrade.
- You experienced a Qualifying Theft or Qualifying Theft Attempt involving your Eligible Vehicle.
- At the time of the Qualifying Theft or Qualifying Theft Attempt, you already had the Software Upgrade installed on your vehicle or you had an appointment scheduled to receive the Software Upgrade.
- The Qualifying Theft or Qualifying Theft Attempt happened on or after April 29, 2025.
- The Qualifying Theft or Qualifying Theft Attempt happened before the earlier of (1) the date you received the free zinc-reinforced ignition cylinder protector hardware upgrade on your Eligible Vehicle or (2) March 31, 2027.
- You have not already received compensation under this Multistate Immobilizer Settlement for a Qualifying Theft or Qualifying Theft Attempt involving this vehicle, because the settlement allows only a one-time payment.

What this settlement is about
Hyundai and Kia have reached a multistate settlement with state attorneys general over vehicles that were sold without standard engine immobilizers, a gap that allegedly made these cars easier targets for theft. Under the deal, the automakers are offering eligible owners a free anti-theft upgrade, consisting of a software update and a zinc-reinforced ignition cylinder protector.
Owners whose vehicles were stolen or targeted in an attempted theft on or after April 29, 2025, may also be eligible for restitution, but only under certain conditions. To qualify, you must show that the software upgrade was already installed at the time of the incident, or that you had an appointment scheduled to get it done. You'll also need to submit documentation proving the theft or attempted theft occurred, along with records of any related expenses.
Of the total settlement fund, up to $4.5 million is set aside for consumer restitution, with another $4.5 million going to the states involved. Claims are processed and paid on a rolling basis as they're received, so funds could run out before the claims deadline of March 31, 2027.
